Our Research
This section highlights all the research carried out by staff within their programmes in the Geological Survey and related initiatives.
Climate
GSI teams are involved in climate research in a number of key areas. We collaborate with partners in Ireland and internationally to better understand the interaction of the solid Earth with our atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. We also provide data on past climates, the ongoing impact of climate change on our natural world, and we look at how these impacts will affect us into the future
Geothermal
Key projects for our Geothermal programme include GeoERA, MUSE, GeoConnect3d, HotLime, SEAI-GSI projects and some of the GSI Short Calls project
Geohazards
Geohazards research includes karst, landslides, tsunami, earthquakes and flooding
Geoheritage
Our Geoheritage programme collaborates with the Geoparks network, academia and GSNI.
Geological Mapping
Our Geological Mapping programme draw on several areas of research and datasets to constantly improve our maps and products.
Groundwater
Key research activities for our Groundwater programme include aquifers, groundwater pathways, karst and related flooding.
Marine and Coastal Unit
We carry out a wide range of research in relation to the marine environment through national and international programmes.
Minerals
We are involved in a number of national and international research programmes in the minerals and raw materials area.
Tellus
Our Tellus programme highlights new development and data products, particularly in the area of geochemical mapping and airborne geophysics.
EU funded projects
We are involved in numerous international projects funded by the European Commission and international consortia.
Public Perception Research
We are involved in a number of projects related to public perception and understanding of geosciences and collaborating with social scientists in this area.
