Tellus Soil Sampling
After 13 years, the Tellus soil geochemistry sampling programme has been completed with the final sample taken in Co. Cork. Over 41,000 samples have been collected as part of the survey that started back in 2011 in the border region of Ireland.
Teams of samplers have covered 1000's of hectares of land, travelling through fields, bogs, and mountains to reach all corners of our island in the pursuit of soil. Samples were taken every 4km2 on a regular grid ensuring all types of soil were collected nationwide. Additional samples were also collected with urban areas at a higher density.
Once collected the samples are sent to a laboratory where the chemistry of the soil is analysed. To date, over 50% of the samples have been fully analysed and published. Data and maps can be found here.
The soil geochemistry data will be used to support research and policy in the agricultural, environmental, and geological sectors.
A StoryMap which tells the story of the sampling survey over the years through maps and images can be found here.
