The Marine and Coastal Unit also participate in coastal change projects such as
CHERISH (Climate, Heritage and Environments of Reefs, Islands, and Headlands). This was a 6 year European-funded Ireland-Wales project which was completed in 2023. This cross-disciplinary project was aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the past, present and near-future impacts of climate change, storminess, and extreme weather events on the rich cultural heritage of our sea and coast.
The project recorded 39 sites, completed 189km2 of maritime survey, surveyed 6 shipwrecks, took 6,025 archaeological aerial photographs and collected and analysed 90m of core.
