Geothermal Energy for District Heating in Ireland

In fulfilment of a commitment under the Climate Action Plan for Ireland (2019), in 2020 GSI published An Assessment of Geothermal Energy for District Heating in Ireland. This is a technical document that provides an overview of this sector and a summary of Irish geothermal research to date. It also identifies the potential opportunities, barriers and knowledge gaps that will be addressed by our new geothermal database programme.

This work will support the policy and regulatory work currently being developed by the Geoscience Policy Unit in DECC.

In conjunction with the technical document, in 2020 DECC also published Geothermal Energy in Ireland; a roadmap for a policy and regulatory framework.

National Geothermal Energy Summit

Geological Survey Ireland hosts the annual National Geothermal Energy Summit, which brings together a wide-ranging audience to discuss geothermal topics. The first event was held in November 2022.
