New Groundwater Research Paper

Published:

A new research paper on the topic of groundwater drought susceptibility has been released in the Journal of Hydrology. The research was carried out through a collaboration between Geological Survey Ireland, CDM Smith, South East Technological University and Tobin Consulting Engineers.

The study proposes a method to quantify the groundwater memory as basis for characterising the intrinsic susceptibility of groundwater to drought. Machine learning techniques were used to develop a first of its kind high resolution national map of the groundwater memory.  Results indicated that the lowest drought susceptibility appears to be in low-elevated areas with thick overburden, and vice versa.  The paper freely available here.
