Visit of the Camborne School of Mines to Geological Survey Ireland

Published:

Geological Survey Ireland was delighted to welcome the students of the Camborne School of Mines (University of Exeter) at their new facilities in Citywest, Co Dublin, on Tuesday, 5 April 2022.  This visit was part of a 10-day tour of Ireland led by Dr Declan Vogt for the students of the Masters in Mining Geology.  In the morning, the group learned about the highly technical work carried out by Geological Survey Ireland.  Firstly, Eoin McGrath, Minerals Programme, spoke about the mines and minerals of Ireland and their importance in the current economic and environmental climate. This was followed by Dr Jim Hodgson, Tellus, who gave a detailed account of how the Tellus Programme collects data and the wide range of applications in which they can be used.  After lunch, John Güven, from iCRAG, focused on occurrences of lead and zinc in Irish geology and in particular his experience in Lisheen Mine.  The group had many questions and appreciated the opportunity to interact with specialists.
