Title:

A day in the life (of a volcano-seismologist): Seismic monitoring of Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

Abstract:
Soufriere Hills Volcano (SHV) is an andesitic, dome-building volcano on the island of Montserrat; a British Overseas Territory in the Lesser Antilles Volcanic arc. Beginning in 1995, the current eruption of SHV has consisted of extrusive phases alternating with distinct pause or repose periods. The latest extrusive phase lasted around 4 months, culminating in a partial dome collapse on 11 February 2010, the last major activity to occur to date.

This talk will present an introduction to Montserrat and the current eruption of SHV, along with the monitoring carried out by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO). Details of the seismic monitoring system and the role of the Seismologist are presented, discussing routine analysis and an overview of the seismicity, as well as other aspects such as hazard management and mitigation and education and outreach activities.
