Geoenergy projects carried out by Geological Survey Ireland are focussed on geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage. Current and previous projects have increased our knowledge in these areas.
Shallow geothermal energy – also known as ground source heat – can be used for heating and cooling buildings, offices and factories. We have produced maps and user guides to help people find out more about the resource and where to find it.

The Earth's temperature increases with depth. This energy can be harnessed for district heating and cooling (municipal, residential and industrial uses) or generate electricity. As part of the Climate Action Plan 2019, GSI published An Assessment of Geothermal Energy for District Heating in Ireland.
