2020 Du Noyer Photographic Competition

​The winners of the 2020 Du Noyer Irish Geological Association/Geological Survey Ireland Photographic Competition were announced in Geological Survey Ireland on 17 December 2020.

Irish section:

1st - Anthony Kelly, Little Skellig, Co Kerry

2nd - Jimmy Condon, Clogher, Co Kerry

3rd - Aileen Doran, Portrush, Co Antrim

Overseas section:

Winner - Pawel Zygmunt, Kalsoy, Faroe Islands

 

2020 Winner Anthony Kelly - Little Skellig, Co Kerry

Little Skellig - Sceilig Bheag- Co Kerry. Red mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone of the Old Red Sandstone Group deposited in the Devonian Period (419 – 359 Ma).

 

2nd place Jimmy Condon - Clogher, Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry

Cloichear – Clogher – Corca Dhuibhne, Co Ciarraí. Moderately dipping beds of volcanics and siltstone laid down in the middle Silurian Period (433 – 427 Ma).


 

 

3rd place Aileen Doran - Portrush, Co Antrim

Portrush – Port Rois – Co Antrim. Contact metamorphism caused by Palaeogene Period (60 Ma) igneous intrusion into older Jurassic Period (201 – 145 Ma) sedimentary rocks.

 

Overseas winner Pawel Zygmunt - Kalsoy, Faroe Islands.

Kalsoy, Faroe Islands. Layers of volcanic material. All the rocks of the Faroe Islands were formed between 58 and 54 million years ago at the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean.
