New Tellus Geochemistry Report Comparing Shallow and Deeper Topsoil Data

Published:

Tellus is pleased to publish a report that investigates the comparison between inorganic geochemical data for shallow 'A' and deeper 'S' topsoil samples collected as part of the Tellus programme from across Ireland. Results show significant, if typically subtle differences between the two. The degree of observed difference between A and S samples varies according to the individual element and overall soil composition, which is largely controlled by the nature of the bedrock and the proportion of organic matter in the soil. Anthropogenic inputs to soil can also be recognized and the variation between A and S data can provide further evidence for their source. This preliminary report demonstrates the value of collecting and analysing topsoil samples from different horizons in the soil profile.

The report can be accessed from the Geological Survey Ireland publications page.
