A multi-author, multi-organisation research paper, English et al. 2023, on the potential for deep geothermal energy on the island of Ireland was published recently. Including data from Geological Survey Ireland, the paper provides an overview of geothermal energy, including a discussion on the key geological controls on heat distribution in the subsurface. It also looks at the different types of geothermal resources and their potential uses. The potential of decarbonising the heat sector using geothermal energy is also explored in this publication.

Research was completed by a collaboration of Geological Survey Ireland, Sustainable GeoEnergy Group, University College Dublin, Stellar Geoscience Limited, SFI Research Centre for Applied Geosciences (iCRAG), Completions Geoscience Consulting and Geological Survey of Northern Ireland. The paper can be accessed here.
