2023 Du Noyer Photographic Competition Winners

​The winners of the 2023 Du Noyer Irish Geological Association/ Geological Survey Ireland Photographic Competition were announced in Geological Survey Ireland on Friday, 15 December 2023.

Irish section:

1st - Kevin Ledwith, Dún Briste, Co, Mayo

2nd - Mary Russell, Dunworly Bay, Co. Cork

3rd - Declan Moran, Inishbofin, Co. Galway

Overseas section:

Winner - Kevin Ledwith, Arches National Park, Utah, USA




1st Place Kevin Ledwith

Doonbristy island, Co Mayo. Dún Briste, Co Mhaigh Eo.
Sea stack of sub-horizontal beds, some showing cross-bedding, of siltstone, limestone, and shale from the Carboniferous Period (359-299 million years). 

2nd Place Mary Russell

Dunworly Bay, Co Cork. Bá Dhún Urlainn, Co Chorcaí. 
Upright gently folds in sandstone of the Upper Devonian Period (382 - 359 million years) of the Toe Head Formation. 



3rd Place Declan Moran

Inishbofin, Co Galway. Inis Bó Finne, Co na Gaillimhe. Precambian Period (pre 539 million years) Ben Levy Grit Formation on the north of Inishbofin. 

​Overseas Winner Kevin Ledwith 

Arches National Park, Utah, USA. 
The site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, the park includes formations from the Early Jurassic Glen Canyon Group, and the Middle Jurassic San Rafael Group whose ages range from about 208 Ma to 160 Ma.
