Minerals Development Potential
This project, which was part funded by the International Fund for Ireland, was a cross border initiative with the objective of the identification of opportunities for economic activity associated with the geology and landscape of Counties Cavan and Fermanagh.
Part of the project focused on the industrial mineral potential of the region and the possibility for import substitution. Another element of the study focused on the tourism potential of the area from a geological/landscape standpoint.
Final reports were presented to the local authorities in March 1997.
A further cross border initiative involving the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland was funded by the European Union in the period 1997-1999 and studied both minerals and geotourism aspects.
In addition the GSI is keen to promote further research and collaborative projects, industrial or academic use of databases and digitizing of analogue and paper records.
