INFOMAR LiDAR Survey
Aircraft using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology survey water depths.
Sensors onboard the planes measure the difference between laser returns from the sea surface and seabed allowing the water depth to be calculated. The use of aircraft allows the laser measurements to be made much more efficiently than surveying the same areas with boats and echo sounders.
Water depths from 0 to 70 metres can be surveyed by LiDAR but typically depths of around 15 metres are achieved in Irish Coastal waters. The data acquired will be integrated with that collected using the national state vessels the R.V. Celtic Explorer and the R.V. Celtic Voyager as well as commercial vessels.
