Louth County Council commissioned a geological field guide to promote understanding of the geology of the Cooley-Gullion-Mourne-Slieve Croob area, and possibly boost the number of visitors in promoting the area as a geotourism destination.

The guide was written by Dr Sadhbh Baxter and was published as part the Louth Heritage Plan 2007-11 actions. It was made possible thanks to the Louth Heritage Forum support and generous sponsors including The Heritage Council and the Geological Survey of Ireland.

The book points out how the topics link into school syllabuses, listing items for the Leaving Certificate, Geography, GCE in Geography (CCEA), AS/A Level GCE Geology (WJEC), AS/A Level GCE Geology (OCR).
