To date, the Geological Survey of Ireland has completed Groundwater Protection Schemes for the following local authorities – Cavan, Clare, Cork (South), Donegal, Dublin (Fingal and South Dublin), Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Wicklow and Waterford (an asterisk indicates that the mapping in these counties is currently being updated).
Work is coming to completion in counties Mayo and Tipperary (North and South) and will be published soon. Field Mapping has finished in counties Kerry, West Cork and North Cork and the maps are currently being updated.
Groundwater Protection Scheme Maps Groundwater Protection Scheme maps comprise aquifer, groundwater vulnerability, and source protection area maps, and use hydrogeological data such as well yield and productivity, karst feature and tracing, and depth to rock. These maps and data are available for viewing and download on our web-mapping site .
Groundwater Protection Scheme Reports Reports summarising County Groundwater Protection Scheme mapping and Groundwater Quality, and Source Protection reports are also available.
Groundwater Protection Scheme reports Groundwater Protection Scheme reports summarise the hydrogeology, aquifers, groundwater vulnerability and the groundwater use in a county at the time of the study. Groundwater Quality reports give an overview of the main water quality issues in each county at the time of reporting.
Source Protection Zone reports
Source Protection Zone delineation provides an assessment of the land area that contributes groundwater to a borehole or spring,
• Source reports have been undertaken by the GSI on behalf of Local Authorities since the mid 1990’s. Since then, more than 120 have been completed.
• Recently, a A CDM/TOBIN/OCM project team has been retained by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish Groundwater Source Protection Zones at monitoring points in the EPA’s National Groundwater Quality Network. The project “Establishment of Groundwater Source Protection Zones”, represents a continuation of the GSI’s work, following the principles and methodologies set out in ‘Groundwater Protection Schemes’ (DELG/EPA/GSI, 1999) and in the GSI/EPA/IGI Training course on Groundwater Source Protection Zone Delineation.
•Other reports commissioned by Local Authorities from hydrogeological consultants are available from the relevant Local Authorities.
