Cloonmagunnaun Spring

Cloonmagunnaun Spring is a major rising which was originally developed to form part of the North Roscommon public water supply. However, it became polluted, and subsequently a major treatment works was constructed on the shore of Callow Lake, the southernmost part of Lough Gara

Another substantial rising is found at Luggadill, 2km to the south-southwest.

A further 1.5km south lies an extensive area, covering about 12 km2, with numerous collapse features and small sinks. The area is covered by till, varying in thickness from at least 2m to more than 7m (the depth of the biggest collapse feature, on the axis of a till ridge). No streams leave this area, and we can assume that surface water, and pollution, is easily getting into the groundwater system. Whether the risings to the north are connected is not known yet.
