Data Download Site
Most of the GIS datasets shown on the Web Map Viewers can now be downloaded for free from the following sites
For complete national datasets, you can download GIS data (ESRI shapefiles) in pre-zipped folders from
http://www.dcmnr.gov.ie/Spatial+Data/Geological+Survey+of+Ireland/GSI+Spatial+Data+Dowloads.htm

Web Map Viewers
Read the information below or go straight to the GSI WebMapping Front page , the Groundwater WebMapping Front page, the Bréifne Project Front page or the Seabed Survey Maps.
The Information Management Programme is undertaking an initiative to put GSI maps on the web. The initiative has evolved from a number of areas, particularly the Irish National Seabed Survey and including our Geotechnical database GIS project and the CONOR database project. Essentially we are using proprietary Web Mapping software (ESRI's ArcIMS©) to place GIS (Geographic Information System) enabled maps on a web accessible server. We completed our first trial site internally in December 2002 with Seabed Survey Maps. In March 2003 we added a customised Web mapping site (gsi_multi), with samples of many of GSI's datasets and maps divided into themes. This customisation was carried out by the BGS (British Geological Survey), under the CONOR project. Since then we have been consistently adding datasets. The website is hosted by the Local Government Computer Services Board (LGCSB)
Instructions for using the site are contained within the Help buttons on the respective sites, but are outlined below.

Groundwater WebMapping
The first page on the site outlines the information available and some steps which need to be taken before using the site.
Buttons to enter the web-mapping site and also to the help page are provided.
The Groundwater web-mapping site has been redeveloped and it is hoped that it is now more user-friendly. There are six steps to follow, which will guide you through the process of zooming to the county or town of interest, using the zoom and pan options, selecting information, printing a map, calculating and using the response matrix and viewing the disclaimer and data source information. A "Help & Hints" page describes each step in detail.
Functionality includes:
- Six Steps
- Step 1 - Disclaimer & Data Sources for Vulnerability Mapping
- Step 2 - Zoom to County or Town
- Step 3 - Refine Zoom
- Option 1 - Don't need to adjust zoom level
- Option 2 - Zoom In
- Option 3 - Zoom Out
- Option 4 - Pan
- Option 5 - Zoom to Ireland
- Step 4 - Select Info
- Step 5 - Print Map
- Step 6 - Response Matrices
- Navigating to your area of interest
- Zoom In
- Zoom Out
- Pan
- Zoom Ireland
- Zoom Previous
- Adding information to the map
- Query the Information
- Information about themes - what it contains, source of info etc
- Common Problems
- The Map has disappeared!
- I selected some themes in Step 4 but nothing shows on the map!
- The site has frozen "Response from previous request(s) not received"

Bréifne Project WebMapping
Bréifne is a collaborative initiative between the Geological Surveys of Ireland (GSI) and Northern Ireland (GSNI), the Academy of Irish Cultural Heritages at University of Ulster (Magee), and the local authorities of five counties: Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan and Fermanagh. The Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) funded the project, under the Programme for Peace and Reconciliation 2000-2004, with an overall aim to promote sustainable economic development within the region, particularly within the tourism sector.
The project area covers approximately 3,500km 2, delineated by the Sligo Coast to the west, Lough Key to the south and Lough Erne to the north and east, with the principal focus on an “upland core” encompassing the Dartry, Arigna, Sliabh an Iarainn, Cuilcagh and Bricklieve Mountains.
The team based at GSI have carried out development work on a customised web-mapping interface as a method of delivering and explaining the heritage of the region. It is intended that the Bréifne Web-Mapping ArcIMS site will help people plan a visit to the Bréifne region. The site can also be used for educational purposes. Users can select the information of interest to them; navigate around the map and print hard copy maps and reports. The website contains information on accommodation, restaurants, activities, as well as information on sites of geological archaeological, ecological and cultural interest.
The site can be accessed from the main Bréifne website (www.breifne.ie) by clicking on the “Create your own map” link. This leads you into an introduction page about the site and then an option to enter the basic or advanced site. The basic site was designed with the first time user in mind. There are six easy steps to follow which will guide you through the process of selecting your area of interest, zooming, creating a report, printing a map and using hyperlinks to find additional information.
The advanced site is similar but has some additional functionality. This site was designed for users familiar with web-mapping sites. Extra buttons are available to allow the user greater flexibility to explore the data.
The first page on the site outlines the information available and some steps which need to be taken before using the site.

Seabed Survey Maps.
In June 2007 GSI launched a new Seabed Maps viewer accessible here.
Also in June 2007 GSI launched a site from which INFOMAR offshore & GSI onshore digital data can be downloaded - https://jetstream.gsi.ie/iwdds/index.html Further information is available here.
In the Maps viewer the user controls the map image he or she sees by selecting which layers to make Visible (can be seen) and which to make Active. (i.e can be queried or features identified).
These are switched on or off using the checkboxes beside the layer names in the right-hand menu.
You must click the Refresh Map button each time you check/uncheck a box.
One of the most useful features is the ability to construct queries, based on attributes of the tables on which the maps are built e.g. querying all the characteristics of a selected rectangle, or highlighting on the map a given feature. Once selected these features can be "zoomed to" from the hyperlinks returned with the query.
The toolbar on the Seabed web mapping site allows you to do many of the basic operations you would carry out in GIS.These are from top left, top right etc.: Toggle between legend and layers list. Switch overview location map on or off. Zoom in to selected area. Zoom out X 2. Zoom to extent of all layers. Zoom to active or selected layer. Back to last extent. Pan by Hand Identify all featues in the selected area on screen. Build a Query Find a certain feature. Measure tool for on map distances, (Either single line or polyline) Select measuring units Buffer a line ot, point or polygon to query between layers. Select rectangle. Select by line or polygon. Clear Selection. Print Map/Screen |
The majority of the work on GSI's part, is being carried out by Archie Donovan, the Seabed Survey Data Manager and Gráinne O'Shea a GIS Consultant, with help from Koen Verbruggen. Additional maps will be added as time goes on and we welcome your feed back on the site, maps and attribution, to Archie or Koen. Please have patience as the initial applet takes a while to load depending on your connection speed, averaging 45secs on a 52k modem. Remember to zoom in to area of interest with maps switched off to speed response.
The link below will bring you to the site, just backbar to return . The actual IP address of the site is http://193.178.1.182/website/Introduction_to_GSI_WebMapping.htm
Enjoy!
