Transforming Ireland Seminar Series
Ireland has major unexploited sources of natural energy in municipal organic waste, slurries, slaughter waste and grass. Anaerobically digested in bioreactors to produce biomethane, these feed-stocks can produce renewable gas for the national gas grid. Ireland could readily substitute 7% of natural gas with renewable gas. The natural gas grid can serve as the distribution system for this renewable fuel, connecting to all major cities and over 620,000 houses. The use of the renewable gas is optimised for renewable thermal energy and for transport biofuel. A strategy is proposed whereby 200 digesters of 50,000 t/a scale may be used to treat slurries, slaughter waste, municipal solid waste and grass.
