JB Barry and Partners Win Engineers Ireland Excellence Award for Geoscience
At its Annual Excellence Awards Ceremony on 6th November, Engineers Ireland recognised outstanding achievements by Irish professionals. 2015 marked the first Geoscience Ireland Award which recognised exceptional achievement in the design and delivery of projects requiring significant geoscientific expertise.
JB Barry and Partners Limited won the 2015 Geoscience Award for its Ballaghaderreen Bypass Project.
The Bypass of Ballaghaderreen in Co. Roscommon is approximately 13.5 kilometres long, a single carriageway National Primary road.
The purpose of the scheme was to fulfill the following objectives:
- Remove through traffic, including heavy commercial vehicles from Ballaghaderreen town;
- Reduce journey times and improve road safety along the N5;
- Reduce congestion, thereby improving the environment of Ballaghaderreen town; and
- A grade separated junction with the R293 Regional Road, to the north of Ballaghaderreen, serving as the main N5 access point to and from Ballaghaderreen town.
Forward planning on this project led to the purchase and planning permission for areas of land adjacent to the road corridor to be utilised as material recovery areas. This enabled J. B. Barry and Partners, and later the contractor, to balance the geotechnical elements of the project by utilising their engineering knowledge and expertise.
Projects shortlisted for the Geoscience Award were
AWN Consulting – Seveso Capacity Building in Turkey
GDG Ltd and Openhydro (Joint entry) – Development of a novel geotechnical framework for the optimisation of tidal turbine foundations
Nicholas O’Dwyer Ltd. and Apex Geoservices Ltd. (Joint entry) – Blantyre Water Supply (Water Intake on Shire River, Water Treatment Works,)
Presenting the Award, Koen Verbruggen, Director of the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) noted that all four shortlisted projects were led by members of the Geoscience Ireland Network of 24 companies, which is supported by the Geological Survey of Ireland and Enterprise Ireland.
