Applications invited for the post of Geopark Consultant Geologist
Clare County Council wishes to engage a consultant to provide geological services in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark for the period March 2012 to December 2012.
The fee for the consultancy will be a maximum of €33,000 including VAT
The engagement relates to the completion of a job of work rather than a fixed number of hours per week. The engagement will run until the agreed work programme at the agreed fee has been completed to the satisfaction of the Council.
The Council will provide the use of office facilities free of charge as part of the consultancy work. The consultant appointed will have access to office facilities at the Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark Offices in Ennistymon, Co. Clare where he/she will report to Ms. Carol Gleeson, Manager of the Geopark. The consultant will be required to implement the majority of the work programme in situ in the Burren.
Geopark Consultant Work Programme
- Assist with the implementation of a signage and interpretation programme on Geopark heritage trails linking sites of geological interest throughout the Burren region.
- Continue with the schools education programme and environmental education and training programme for nature based businesses in the Burren developed under the Interreg IVB NEED project
- Organise educational tours, seminars, workshops for 2nd and 3rd level educational groups and explore residential opportunities for field courses linked to curricula.
- Integrate and organise activities/displays/events at visitor and educational centres and services in the Burren into the annual Geopark Programme.
- Manage a site maintenance and monitoring programme at Geopark sites
- Promote and gain recognition for the region at national and international level as a Geopark through the media and attendance/contribution to Geopark related conferences.
- Develop dynamic interactive information on the Geopark website promoting the Geopark and its activities.
- Assist with applications for further funding support at national/EU level.
- Liaise with the European Geopark Network evaluators as required.
- Liaise with all stakeholders in an effective and proactive manner.
- Work closely with the Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark Project team (http://www.burrenconnect.ie/)
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- A 1st or 2nd Class honours degree in Geology or Earth Science
Highly Desirable
- A post-graduate qualification in Earth Science or Geology
- Good knowledge and experience of the geology of the Burren and Irish Geology in general
- Proven experience in conducting public outreach/educational activities
- High level of computer and web literacy
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- A full clean Driving Licence

- Good interpersonal skills – ability to work effectively as a team member.
