Griffith Geoscience Research Awards
At the launch of the National Geoscience Strategy (21 Feb 2007) Minister Dempsey announced a major new Scheme of Research Awards as a practical mechanism for driving the implementation of the National Geoscience Programme and in particular stimulating research capacity. The new Griffith Geoscience Reseach Awards will honour Richard Griffith, the celebrated geologist and engineer, who lived from 1784 to 1878 (94 years).

The Minister declared that he would make €3 million available this year to initiate the Scheme rising up to €10 million over the course of the 7 year Programme. His vision, he said, encompassed both the establishment of open access to digital data in GSI and the development of an all-island graduate school system in geoscience. The Scheme will bolster the research agenda of the programme targeting the vital pillars of energy, environment, marine and infrastructure, “all issues which are central to the success of the NDP” according to the Minister. The programme purposely coincides with the 2007-2013 timeframe of the NDP.

Calls for proposals under the programme were advertised in the national press in March and the closing date for proposals was 18th April.  An independent expert panel carried out the judging of the proposals and results were issued in July.  See Results Announcement
