North Mayo Geology

The geology of the Carboniferous rocks of North Mayo is well displayed in a series of coastal sections. This short guide details those sections which provide a representative view of the geology, and which are all accessible from car parks on, or at the end of, public roads. None of the stops involves crossing farmland. Some of the sections require mid to low tide levels.

Original data were collected during field mapping in the early 70's, and again in 1984. A weekend field trip for the Irish Geological Association provided an incentive to document these sections, and a wealth of new observations were made, and pictures taken, on the trip and on subsequent visits
