Lough Mask introduction

Geology and landscapes around Lough Mask (Leader: Brian McConnell)

Lough Mask lies at the meeting of two landscapes, the Connacht Uplands with the Central Lowlands. The rocky structure, the geology, of these areas is the major control on the shapes of the landscapes. But as well as forming today's landscape, rocks are records of the past. Deep seas, deserts, volcanoes and ice ages are all recorded in the rocks around Lough Mask. This tour aims to lift off the veil of vegetation and human settlement and expose the geology to you as you travel the roads and byways of Mask country.

Browse around the geological map to find information on the rocks and landscapes represented by the coloured areas. The map also contains links to tourist facilities in the area (or go to Tourmakeady web site).
